The following are key dates and deadlines that your nonprofit should be aware of:

  1. Form 990, Form 990-EZ, 990-PF, or 990-BL – Nonprofit organizations are required to file these forms with the IRS every year. The deadline is the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your organization’s fiscal year. For example, if your fiscal year ends on December 31st, the deadline for filing Form 990 would be May 15th, which is next week Monday. A six-month extension is applicable but must be requested through Form 8868.
  2. Form 990-N – Small nonprofit organizations with gross receipts of less than $50,000 are eligible to file Form 990-N (also known as the e-Postcard) instead of the full Form 990. The deadline for filing Form 990-N is the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your organization’s fiscal year, just like Form 990. Extensions do not apply.
  3. State filings – In addition to federal tax filings, nonprofit organizations must also comply with state filing requirements. Each state has its own requirements for nonprofit tax filings, so it is important to check with your state’s taxing authority to determine the applicable deadlines.
